India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma, double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, and former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina on Thursday expressed shock and extended their prayers for the safety and well-being of all those aboard the ill-fated Air India flight that crashed near a residential area close to Ahmedabad airport.
Flight AI 171, which was carrying 232 passengers and 10 crew members, went down just minutes after departing from the airport at approximately 2 PM, leading to fears of multiple casualties.
The Boeing aircraft, seen rapidly losing altitude, crashed in the Meghaninagar locality, sending thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky, visible from several miles away.
“Really sad and disturbing news from Ahmedabad. Prayers for all the lives lost and their families,” wrote Rohit on Instagram.
Sindhu conveyed her grief over the tragedy, stating, "Deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London today, June 12, 2025. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of all 242 souls on board. May love surround every grieving heart and strength find those left behind."

Raina also expressed his anguish in a post on social media, writing, "Absolutely devastated by the news of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My heartfelt prayers for all the lives lost and strength to the families affected."

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also responded to the heartbreaking development, saying, “Heartbreaking news about the #AirIndia plane crash in Ahmedabad. Thoughts and prayers with the passengers, crew, and families affected . May they find strength in this difficult time.”

Indian T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav and Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan too expressed their condolences. Suryakumar wrote on Instagram, "Shocked to hear about the tragic plane crash of Air India-Ahmedabad-London flight. Thoughts and prayers to all the lives lost. Wishing for safety of every resident staying in that affected area."
Meanwhile, the Gujarat Titans spinner added, "Really saddened to hear about the tragic crash in Ahmedabad today. My thoughts and prayers to all the victims and their families. May you have the strength to bare this loss. Also praying for strength to all the first responders."
Franchises from the Indian Premier League also voiced their condolences. Gujarat Titans posted on X, "We are deeply saddened by the plane crash in Ahmedabad. We pray for everyone affected and their families."
