Former Australia batter Usman Khawaja claimed on Saturday that the entire team knew about the 2018 Sandpapergate scandal.
“It was all of us. Not [just] the batters, bowlers, or staff,” Khawaja said ahead of the release of his autobiography, despite bowlers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon publicly denying in 2021 that they knew about the ball-tampering incident.
Khawaja said he spoke with the team after the Cape Town, urging them to take collective responsibility, rather than scapegoating David Warner, Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft. “In an ideal world, I don’t want to be the one who talks about the truth. But thought after eight years the truth would have been out by now,” he added. Later in the day, Cricket Australia stated: “All relevant information has been properly considered, and we remain comfortable with the findings of our inquiry.”
