World Cup-winning former India captain MS Dhoni, who is on duty in Ladakh with the Indian Army, brought in India's 73rd Independence Day with the people of the newly formed union territory.

On August 5, 2019, the PM Narendra Modi-led government of India, scrapped provisions of Article 370 and 35 A, to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir along-with Ladakh into two separate union territories.
