Ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, Team India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has provided clarity on the availability of lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah, with an aim to keep him fit for future tournaments.
When asked if the management has designed any workload plan for Bumrah, Agarkar said, "I don’t think there’s any written plan at the moment."
Further speaking more on his fitness, the chief selector said that a break was provided to him after the England series, and the professionals have been in constant touch with the pacer.
"Obviously, there’s been a nice break after the England series as well. The team management, the physios, or the people concerned are always in touch. It’s not just now. Even before his injury, we’ve tried to look after him because we know how valuable he is," added the 47-year-old.
The former pacer also said that India’s management is looking at Bumrah to play in the mega events in the future.
"Clearly, we want him available for all the big games. I know international cricket—every game is a big game—but there are World Cups, there are Champions Trophies or big series like England or Australia, where you want him available all the time," said the Mumbai-born former cricketer.
On Bumrah’s injury struggles in recent years, Agarkar stressed the extra attention given to his workload management.
"Most fast bowlers are monitored, and yes, because he’s picked up an injury over the last two or three years, there’s extra care taken on how unique and how special he is, and it won’t change. It won’t change whether it’s this series or maybe the next six months," he added.
The Asia Cup 2025 will begin on 9 September, with the first match scheduled to be played between Afghanistan and Hong Kong. The "Men in Blue" will kick off their tournament with a match against the UAE on 10 September.
