While India cruised to a convincing seven-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2025 clash on Sunday, the match has become a hotbed of controversy.

From the outset, tension was evident. At the toss, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav pointedly avoided shaking hands with his Pakistani counterpart Salman Ali Agha. Once the match concluded, Suryakumar and fellow batter Shivam Dube again declined to shake hands with the Pakistan players, instead walking straight off the field into the dressing room.

While the Pakistan team remained on the field, waiting to engage in the traditional post-match handshakes, no Indian player returned. The gesture is believed to be a quiet protest amid escalating political tensions, particularly following the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year and India’s subsequent military operation dubbed ‘Operation Sindoor’.

In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially lodged a complaint with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), expressing disappointment and alleging a breach of sportsmanship. The PCB also called for the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft, claiming he instructed Salman Ali Agha not to initiate a handshake with Suryakumar during the toss.

Amid the diplomatic fallout, a key question now looms: Can India face disciplinary action?

According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Preamble to the Spirit of Cricket, embedded in the T20I Playing Conditions, emphasises the importance of mutual respect and good sportsmanship. It states: “Show self-discipline, even when things go against you. Congratulate the opposition on their success, and enjoy those of your own team. Thank the officials and your opposition at the end of the match, whatever the result.”

Furthermore, Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct identifies 'conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game' as a Level 1 offence.

Although the ICC has not released an official statement, Suryakumar's actions may be interpreted as a breach of the Spirit of Cricket. If the governing body decides to act, it may impose a minor fine, though historically such penalties have been symbolic rather than severe.
