Australia drove to a six-wicket win over New Zealand in the first Twenty20 in Wellington on Friday. 
Opting to bat first the New Zealand batsmen were bowled over by the speed of Shaun Tait, Dirk Nannes and Mitchell Johnson for mere 118 runs.
It was James Franklin who hit 43 off 42 balls while Hopkins contributed 21 off 13 to help NZ post a respectable total.
Johnson finished with 3 for 19, as the trio operated around 150 kph to grab seven wickets among them.
David Hussey (46 of 36 balls) and Michael Clarke (18 of 26) steadied the Australian innings till the end after they lost three quick wickets for 39 runs.
The mighty Australians chased the total with four overs to spare.
After an unbeaten home summer the visitors have begun their tour with another powerful display of fast bowling and batting.
The second Twenty20 game between the two sides would be played on February 28 at Christchurch, which would be followed, by five ODI games and two Test matches.
