When Indian cricket board lawyer Kapil Sibal told the Supreme Court yesterday that the establishment chief Anurag Thakur was a cricketer, he did not impress TS Thakur, the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
"We are all cricketers here. I was captain of the Supreme Court team," the CJI told Sibal, who was replying to a question raised by the Supreme Court on what qualified the BCCI officials to run the Board.
Interestingly, Thakur played and captained Himachal Pradesh in a solitary Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir in 2000. Thakur was out for a duck in the four-day match played at Maulana Azad Memorial Stadium in Jammu.
Surendra Singh Bagal, the opposition bowler, who dismissed Thakur, said from Jammu, "We found him to be an average player, but our team recognised him as a son of the Chief Minister then. I was determined to take his wicket off my first ball, which I did," the left-arm medium pacer said.
"Anurag played six balls from the other bowlers and could not open his account. He misread the first ball of the over and offered an easy catch to the fielder (Sanjay Sharma).
Anurag was not an outstanding player but still could grab two wickets," Surendra Singh added. The scorecard on a website shows Rajeev Nayyar as captain of Himachal Pradesh, but Nayyar, now a state selector clarified: "I was captain in the earlier matches and scored over 300 runs. I am not aware why I was sacked as a captain."
