A day before the India vs Pakistan ICC Champions Trophy final, Jasprit Bumrah was accompanied by head coach Anil Kumble to one of the practice pitches at one end of The Oval. Green markers were placed on the good length spot as Bumrah attempted to hit the markers on a regular basis off a short run-up.
The right-arm pacer managed to consistently hit those markers but on each occasion, his front foot was a good 10cms over the crease. Bumrah might have been coming off a short run, but the fact that he was over-stepping on each occasion was something that should have been picked up by Kumble.
Not once did the coach pick Bumrah’s blunders. To be fair, Kumble was stationed behind Bumrah, but in the modern era of analysis, such things should never be missed.
Bad habit While he might have been experimenting with a few deliveries, it seemed like a bad habit had crept into Bumrah’sgame. Fast bowlers are known to try various aspects of bowling in the nets before the match, but in the process, forget about the simple elements such as keeping their front foot behind the crease.
Bumrah’s sloppiness cost India dearly at The Oval yesterday.
First, he was denied a wicket of century-maker Fakhar Zaman when on three after he over-stepped the line. The Pakistan opener went on to smash India all round the paddock on route to 114 from 106 balls.
It simply didn’t end there for Bumrah, as he committed the cardinal sin again in the death overs resulting in two free hits.
Horrible mistakes It is hard to digest that in such a professional era a bowler can make such mistakes during a practice session and then expect to get away with it in a match scenario.

Not only did the pacer over-step and give Pakistan centurion Fakhar an early life, he also provided the opposition two free hits during the death overs
