Shaun Marsh's fighting half-century went in vain as Kings XI Punjab lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 26 runs in their Indian Premier League match at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium here yesterday.
Chasing down 208, the home team, playing their first match of the season here in Mohali, needed a good opening stand. But they lost both the openers, Martin Guptill (23) and Manan Vohra (3) inside the first powerplay.
Things went from bad to worst when captain Glenn Maxwell (0) too departed cheaply. If at all KXIP were able to make a match of it, it was due to the efforts of Shaun Marsh (84 off 50 balls; 14x4, 2x6) and Eion Morgan (26 off 21 balls).
But it was asking for too much from them and KXIP managed 181 for 9.
Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan (77 off 48 balls) and David Warner (51 off 27 balls) put up a century partnership and then Kane Williamson (54 off 27 balls) collected a brilliant half-century to help Sunrisers notch up a formidable 207-3 in their 20 overs.
Warner and Dhawan set the tone of the match with a fluent 107-run partnership in only 10 overs. With that type of score at the half-way mark in the innings, Sunrisers should have easily crossed the 225-run mark.
But after the departure of Warner the scoring rate dropped a bit. It was a superb unbeaten half-century by Williamson that helped Sunrisers cross 200 in the final over of the innings.
Warner went berserk when he hammered Axar Patel for two sixes and a four to get the innings going. Warner however was lucky as he was dropped by keeper Wriddhiman Saha on 25.
Making full use of the reprieve in the following over he sent another over the ropes. He attacked with gusto to get to his half-century in only 25 balls with four boundaries and as many sixes, before losing his wicket to Maxwell trying a wild heave.
Dhawan was more watchful to ensure that the innings did not lose momentum. He went on to score 77, before he was well held by Maxwell on the mid-wicket boundary off Mohit Sharma.
The innings of the day came from the blade of New Zealander Williamson, who played a gem of an innings to help the team post a formidable total. He played some breathtaking drives and pulled one over the mid-wicket fence. He played a reverse shot to the fine-leg to complete the half-century off the penultimate delivery off only 26 balls.
