Sri Lanka and Chennai Super Kings’ versatile batting all-rounder Kamindu Mendis produced a moment of pure brilliance during IPL 2025 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday.

The highlight of the evening came when Dewald Brevis, aiming to clear the ropes, unleashed a blistering flat shot off a half-volley from SRH pacer Harshal Patel. The ball was struck with immense power and seemed destined to pierce through the field at long-off, until Mendis intervened.

Stationed perfectly, Mendis judged the trajectory with precision. Despite the ball veering away from him, the ambidextrous cricketer launched himself to the left and completed a stunning catch mid-air. The crowd erupted in disbelief as replays confirmed the clean take.

Former India skipper Ravi Shastri, on commentary, called it the 'catch of IPL', while West Indies legend Ian Bishop marvelled at Mendis’ ambidexterity, quipping, 'which is his weak side, we never know'. Watch the video below:

This breathtaking moment came amidst a tense encounter between two struggling teams, each having only four points from eight matches. The game had taken on the tone of a virtual knockout, with playoff hopes hanging by a thread. A loss for either side would almost certainly shut the door on their qualification chances.

Chennai Super Kings, five-time IPL champions and once nearly invincible at their Chepauk fortress, have looked a shadow of their former selves this season. Their uncanny knack for exploiting home conditions appears to have faded, with recent surfaces not suiting their traditionally spin-heavy strategy.

Though CSK began their home campaign in style with a dominant win over Mumbai Indians, thanks in part to a magical spell from spinner Noor Ahmad, the early promise fizzled quickly. The side has since suffered three consecutive defeats at home, including a disheartening loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in which they were bundled out for their lowest-ever IPL score at Chepauk, a meagre 103/9.
