The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) move to bring in Mohinder Amarnath in the selection panel from North Zone had a motive behind it. The former India all-rounder, who was already in the Indian Premier League's (IPL) Governing Council, was sounded out at the last hour about the selector's job that was up for grabs after Yashpal Sharma finished his four-year term. "Having Mohinder as selector would help us next year when (Kris) Srikkanth quits. We won't have to look for a chairman," a BCCI official said.

The hero of 1983 World Cup win, Amarnath, also seemed quite upbeat with the role he got. "I am looking forward to it," told MiD DAY. Asked about working together with long-time friend Srikkanth, Amarnath sounded excited. "It will be great working with Cheeka (Srikkanth) and so with other colleagues... I have also played with Narendra Hirwani, so that will obviously help," Amarnath added.
