The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has been ordered to remove former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin’s name from the North Pavilion Stand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal. The order was passed by HCA’s Ethics Officer and Ombudsman Justice V Eswraiah. According to sources, the HCA admitted that they had received the order. “We will see the order and implement it accordingly,’’ said a source.

According to the order, no tickets henceforth will be printed with the name of Azharuddin. Initially, the North Stand was named after VVS Laxman post his retirment in 2012. However, once Azhar took over as HCA president in 2019, the Stand was named the Mohd Azharuddin North Stand and was inaugurated by Laxman himself ahead of the India-West Indies T20 series.

Picture frames of Laxman in front of the Indian dressing were removed and replaced with Azharuddin’s picture frames. This did not go down well with many of the members and Lords Cricket Club treasurer Somna Misra filed a petition stating that to name the stand after Azharuddin was illegal, violating the rules and regulations of 2018. The petitioner said that the action of Azharuddin is against Rule 38 which clearly postulates that a member of the Apex Council cannot take a decision in his own favour.
