ICC World Cup 2023: Afghan captain Shahidi says, 'We are a brave nation and we’ve shown that through cricket too'

Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi’s body language showcased the Afghanistan team’s confidence level as he entered the Wankhede Stadium’s conference hall on the eve of their clash with former champions Australia on Monday

He underlined how fearless his nation as well as his team were. They have outclassed three former champions — England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka — in this tournament.
“We are a brave nation and we’ve shown that through cricket also. In such a short time, we have achieved a lot as compared to other countries. And right now, we know the whole world is talking about our team’s performance. As a team also, we are happy about that. Tomorrow [Tuesday] is one of the important games for us. We are here to fight and we will try our best,” Shahidi said during the pre-match press conference on Monday.

Shahidi, 29, revealed the winning formula of his team which have won four out of seven games in the ongoing World Cup. He reckoned that his team had the belief to win and worked hard to achieve the desired results with talent to overcome any opponent. He remarked: “Belief, hard work, and talent. These are the three main points that we have in the team. At the beginning, we had the belief, but for that we had to win. So, when we won against England and Pakistan, the belief rate became higher. And we are now not looking back. We are moving forward, looking forward, and we are trying our best to improve as a team match by match.”
