Akash Deep etched his name alongside some of India’s finest fast bowlers by becoming only the fifth Indian to claim at least four wickets in each innings of a Test match in England. The 28-year-old seamer achieved the milestone on Sunday during the second Test at Edgbaston.
Akash delivered a telling blow to England’s hopes on the final day by removing both overnight batters, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook, early in the first session. He wrapped up the morning with figures of 4 for 58, after having taken 4 for 88 in the first innings. His exploits added him to a distinguished list featuring Chetan Sharma, Zaheer Khan, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj, all of whom have recorded similar feats in England.
Whenever an Indian pacer has claimed four or more wickets in both innings of a Test in England, India has never ended up on the losing side. Sharma and Bumrah’s efforts resulted in draws, while Zaheer and Siraj helped secure victories.
India continued to dominate proceedings on day five despite a delayed start due to rain, which pushed back play by nearly two hours and left 80 overs to be bowled. England resumed on 72 for 3, still trailing by 556 runs, with Pope on 24 and Brook on 15.
Akash wasted little time, striking in his second over to castle Pope before trapping Brook lbw with a sharp delivery that seamed back off the surface. England skipper Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith attempted to steady the innings, stitching together a 50-run stand for the sixth wicket. Stokes found some fluency, hitting four boundaries off Siraj, but fell just before lunch for 33 when Washington Sundar trapped him plumb in front.
At lunch, England were tottering at 153 for 6, still needing 455 runs for an improbable win, with Smith unbeaten on 32.
Earlier in the match, India piled up 587 in their first innings thanks to a masterclass from captain Shubman Gill, who struck a magnificent 269. Siraj then claimed 6 for 70 to bowl England out for 407, giving India a handy lead of 180. In the second innings, Gill added another century, scoring 161 as India declared at 427 for 6, setting England a daunting target of 608.
Brief scores:
India 587 (Shubman Gill 269, Ravindra Jadeja 89; Shoaib Bashir 3/167)
