Following Team India's iconic victory against England at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, former skipper Dilip Vengsarkar expressed his views on the match.
Skipper Shubman Gill put on an exceptional show with the willow. In the first innings of the second Test match, the right-hander scored 269 runs off 387 balls, including 30 boundaries and three maximums. Later in the second innings, the 25-year-old accumulated 161 runs off 162 balls, which included 13 boundaries and eight sixes.
Speaking about Gill's performance, Vengsarkar said, "It was a very important win, Lord’s will be a very important match. Gill batted extremely well. I think we were short of a spin bowler but the bowlers did well. Akash Deep grabbed his opportunity with both hands. He will be a frontline bowler for the team. I did think we declared late but India won, that's what is important".
Akash Deep came in as a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah for the Birmingham clash. Bumrah was earlier advised not to play in consecutive Test matches, considering his workload management.
The former skipper was nothing short of praise for an Indian team that has entered the series without the likes of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He also felt Kuldeep Yadav's inclusion would be beneficial for the visitors for the remainder of the series.
"With no Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and Bumrah opting out, everyone contributed. Bumrah is a great bowler but it is very important that he remains fit. I think if Kuldeep comes in it’ll be beneficial. Gill is in form, which is very important as a captain because then he can lead from the front," said the 69-year-old.
During the match, pacer Akash claimed four and six wickets in England's first and second innings respectively. Along with him, Mohammed Siraj stepped up for the occasion and grabbed six wickets in the hosts' first innings.
One of the interesting aspects to look out for in the upcoming Test match will be the feature of Karun Nair. In both Test matches, the right-hander struggled to put on a big score. Will Team India's think tank provide another opportunity to Nair despite delivering average performances?
