Former India head coach Ravi Shastri lauded Shubman Gill for scoring big against England at Edgbaston, saying that it was evident the right-handed batter worked hard on his defence and looked great overall.

On Day Two, Gill fought hard to hit his maiden Test double century. Coming at No. 4, Gill showed immense responsibility as well as patience and played like someone extremely determined to grind it out to score  269 off 387 deliveries, a knock laced with 30 fours and three sixes.

“Gill has worked hard on his defence. When he last came to England, he played with hard hands, but now, the top hand is in much more control. He allows the ball to come to him, trusts his defence and has all the shots in the book when he attacks,” said Shastri on Sky Sports’s broadcast.

“I thought he’s been fabulous. It’s a good sign. When you get captaincy, a lot of people can go into their shell. He’s shown he can play both ways. He was attacking in Leeds, here he has batted very responsibly and very determined,” he added.
