Team India, under Shubman Gill's captaincy, is all geared up to clash against England for the second Test match at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, as they look to redeem themselves after a loss in the first test.
In the previous match, despite Team India registering five centuries, they failed to pull the score sheets in their favour. The Indian cricket team lost the match by five wickets at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds.
Batting first in the series opener, Team India was in a strong position, riding on the knock of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Over the years, the left-hander has established himself as the reliable option at the top of the batting order.
During Leeds' encounter, the 23-year-old amassed 101 runs off 159 deliveries in the first innings of the match. He also smashed 16 boundaries and a maximum. With this, he led India to a strong position, after which skipper Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant, too, smashed centuries in the same innings. However, he fell cheaply in the second innings, scoring only four runs including one boundary in 11 balls.
Many do not realise an opening batsman's role in Test cricket. If the top-order batsmen set the tone right from the beginning of the game, it makes it easier for the middle-order batters to capitalise on the momentum.
Along with Jaiswal, KL Rahul showcased immense character and scored 42 runs in 78 balls, including eight boundaries in the first innings, while scoring 137 in thee second, showing promise in supporting each other at the top.
Ahead of the second Test match in Birmingham, the visitors will expect Jaiswal to replicate his performance and play a crucial role in helping India level the series. Currently, they are trailing by 0-1 in the five-match Test series.
Additionally, the left-hander requires just 97 runs to reach the 2000-run feat in the longest format of the game. So far, he has played just 20 Test matches and has shown promising signs at the top with consistency and grit displayed with the willow. In as many Tests for India so far, he has 1903 runs with a top score of an unbeaten 214 runs.
