Farokh Engineer
The Old Trafford cricket ground in Manchester will now have a Farokh Engineer Stand, which will be inaugurated on the morning of the fourth India vs England Test on Wednesday.
Engineer, 87, informed mid-day on Sunday that the stand is in between the main pavilion and the media centre.
Historians reckon this is the first instance of an overseas stand being named after an Indian cricketer.
The former India wicketkeeper batsman, who played Test and ODI cricket for the country from December 1961 to June 1975, represented Lancashire in the county championship and premier limited overs competitions from 1968 to 1976.
Breaking the news to friends on WhatsApp, Engineer said: “I already have a Hilton Hotel suite named after me in my honour, but on Wednesday they are unveiling the Farokh Engineer Stand in the world famous Old Trafford stadium. Huge honour indeed.”
