Former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly heaped praise on Rishabh Pant for showcasing grit despite sustaining an injury on his foot.
Following the injury, Pant was ruled out of the fifth and final Test match.
Speaking about Pant's injury, Ganguly said it will take time to recover, but he had batted brilliantly.
“He is a very good Test player. He is injured and his foot was fractured; he will take time to recover. He has batted brilliantly in the series,” he told IANS.
So far in the seven innings, the left-hander has accumulated 479 runs, including two centuries.
Rishabh Pant sustained an injury in India's first innings of the fourth Test match. In Chris Woakes' over, the left-hander got a hit on his foot by a yorker.
The ball deflected off his bat and slammed into his boot, causing a fracture that forced him to retire hurt before bravely returning the next day to complete a gritty half-century (54), despite visible discomfort.
In the fourth Test match, the unbeaten centuries from Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja helped the side register a draw. Following their match-saving knocks, Ganguly said the team played good cricket.
"India played good cricket and saved the Test match after batting for more than 140 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar played really well," said the veteran of 113 Test matches.
Ahead of the fifth Test match, Team India has named N Jagadeesan as Pant's replacement. The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer has shown promising signs in domestic cricket and in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
But for the final Test match, Dhruv Jurel is expected to don the 'Big Gloves'. The fifth and final Test match is scheduled to be played at The Oval, starting from July 31.
Additionally, it will be interesting to see if lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah lines up for the all-important clash. Earlier, the pacer was advised not to play consecutive Test matches, considering his workload management. Following the advice from the professionals, Team India's think tank made Bumrah feature in just three matches.
But the Indian side has currently found themselves in a situation in which the likes of Bumrah would be ideal for their attempt to draw the series.
