Mumbai Indians suffered only their second home loss in Indian Premier League-10 last night as Kings XI Punjab edged out the two-time champions by seven runs in a high-scoring encounter at the Wankhede Stadium last night.
Faced with a gigantic target of 231, the hosts started off well with a 99-run opening stand between Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel. However, they couldn't go the distance after the openers, Nitish Rana and skipper Rohit Sharma departed. Kieron Pollard (24-ball 50) and Hardik Pandya (30 off 13 balls) thrilled the crowd with some lusty hitting which provided MI with some hope, before finishing on 223-6 in 20 overs.
Earlier, pressure to win their remaining two games for a spot in the play offs of IPL-10, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) posted a colossal 230-3 against table toppers Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday.
Wriddhiman Saha (93* off 55 balls) and skipper Glenn Maxwell (47 off 21 balls) were the principal scorers for Kings XI Punjab.
This is also the highest score registered by a team this season, going passed Delhi Daredevils' 214 against Gujarat Lions on May 4. KXIP have posted 230 for the third time in all editions of the IPL.
MI bowlers had an off day as the visiting batsmen toyed with their bowling. Put into bat, KXIP openers Martin Guptill (36) and surprise opener Saha displayed the right intent. The duo put on 68 runs with Guptill (5x4, 1x6) doing most of the damage in his 18-ball stay at the crease.
MI skipper Rohit Sharma tried all his bowling options to break the partnership, but it was injured Krunal Pandya's replacement - leg-break bowler Karn Sharma - who broke the stand. Kiwi Guptill tried to go for the slog sweep again, but didn't connect and Hardik Pandya did the rest by running backwards at mid-on.
KXIP sprung another surprise at the opposition when skipper Maxwell entered at No. 3. The Aussie all-rounder went berserk from the word go, smashing five huge sixes and two fours in just 21 deliveries. KXIP kissed the 100-run mark in the eighth over. MI's most economical pacer Jasprit Bumrah (1-24) then got into the act by cleaning up Maxwell's off stump in the 11th over, but the damage had already been done. Saha then shifted gears, attacking the bowlers along with Shaun Marsh (25).
Saha and Marsh then joined hands as they took the MI bowlers to the cleaners during their 52-run stand for the third wicket.
The pitch, loaded with runs, had nothing for the bowlers. However, Mitchell McCleneghan (1-54) brought some with Marsh's wicket. The Australian tried to hit over midwicket, but was caught by Parthiv Patel.
It was a day to forget for MI's veteran offie Harbhajan Singh, who went for 45 runs in his three overs. Speedster Lasith Malinga (0-45) too was off target in his four overs.
