Bangalore: When Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Lions faced off at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here last night, both teams knew they couldn't afford to lose, not if they were to have a chance of advancing in the tournament.
The pressure therefore was huge and it was a question of which team would handle it better. As it turned out, the ones to succumb were RCB, a fact readily admitted by Kedar Jadhav, the one man who seemed to be handling the situation well before he too fell away as RCB made a mere 134 after being put into bat.
Were they too desperate and did that cost the side, Jadhav was asked at the post match press conference. "Not really, but obviously, the anxiety was there," stated Jadhav. "We were anxious to create momentum for us because we always knew that we have to in all the games if we have to qualify for the knockouts. So there is always some added pressure, but you cannot change according to that pressure. I guess you need to keep on playing whatever you have been doing in the past."
They didn't, with the opening pair of Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle being overcautious to begin with against the young pace duo of Nathu Singh and Basil Thampi. And so very different from how Gujarat Lions started their chase.
"Sometimes in a small run chase, you can make the mistake of trying to bat slowly and before you know, the run rate is 7, 8, 9 an over. It was a conscious effort from the side to attack the game," explained Aaron Finch (72), the batting hero on the night for the Lions.
The Australian was, of course, grateful to his bowlers for having set up what turned to be an easy seven-wicket win. "We saw our young quicks -- Nathu and Basil really stand up with the new ball against some of the best players to have ever played this format of the game. And then Andrew Tye and James Faulkner stepped up with Jaddu (Jadeja). Ankit Soni as well bowled beautifully on his debut. It was a polished performance from the bowlers," acknowledged Finch.
