During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired the services of Australia's star all-rounder Cameron Green for a whopping Rs 25.20 crore.
He also became the third most-expensive player in the history of the cash-rich league.
Following the auction, former cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin said Chennai Super Kings (CSK) missed a trick after losing the bid to KKR.
CSK and KKR were considered strong contenders to secure Cameron Green's services —one of the standout names in the mini auction —thanks to their larger budgets compared to other franchises. Both teams aggressively pursued the young all-rounder, but CSK withdrew once the price crossed Rs 25 crore.
"If KKR had been slightly patient, like some other franchises, like Punjab, took their time with the bidding. If KKR had also bid like that, then I think CSK would have let go of Cameron Green much more earlier. KKR felt that CSK bid on Green because they had to," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
"I felt Cameron Green would have been a great addition to CSK, I think they missed a trick, according to me. Whatever said and done, it is not about the price point, Green is a generational talent, and it is a brilliant acquisition for KKR," added the former cricketer.
Green is set to represent his third franchise in the history of the cash-rich league. Earlier, he played for Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The 26-year-old cricketer skipped the previous auction as he sustained a long-term injury during the off-season.
The upcoming edition of the league is set to kick off from March 26 to May 31, 2026. It remains to be seen if defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru's home base gets a game after a deadly stampede halted all big-ticket cricket at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
As per established norms, the Chinnaswamy should host the tournament opener, given that the home side, RCB, won the IPL 2025 title, but that is unlikely to be clear till the time the BCCI comes out with the full-scale schedule. The venue was witness to chaos and a stampede, which left 11 dead, after the Bengaluru-based franchise's trophy celebrations drew lakhs on the streets.
