In the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/photo/ipl-2026-kl-rahul-set-to-complete-1000-runs-for-delhi-capitals-110962" rel="nofollow">IPL 2026</a> match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Mumbai Indians (MI) emerged victorious by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
During the match, MI's stalwart Rohit Sharma delivered a knock of 84 runs off just 44 balls, including six boundaries and seven maximums.
Reflecting on his knock, legendary Team India batsman <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ipl-2026-he-should-go-back-to-his-basics-sunil-gavaskars-advice-to-bumrah-23628949" rel="nofollow">Sunil Gavaskar</a> feels that since the time Rohit was snubbed from the captaincy, he seems to have focused on his batting.
"I have been watching Rohit Sharma closely over the last year. Ever since he was removed as captain in white-ball cricket and the IPL, he has focused more on his batting. He scored runs in the ODI series against Australia, did well in home series, and now he is doing the same in the IPL," he said on Star Sports.
The former cricketer also feels that the right-handed batsman has been delivering impactful knocks for the "Paltan" despite not scoring many 80-plus knocks. He also added that if Rohit continues to bat in that manner, the "Men in Blue and Gold" could create problems in the playoff race for the other teams.
"In the IPL, he usually scores 400 to 500 runs a season, but his knocks are often impactful. He may not have many 80-plus innings, but his 40 to 50-run starts give his team early momentum. The change in his game is clear: he now wants to bat deeper and leave a bigger impact. In this 84-run knock, we saw all the typical <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ipl-2026-rohit-sharma-ryan-rickelton-exceptional-batting-display-helps-paltan-reach-127-runs-in-10-overs-23628833" rel="nofollow">Rohit Sharma</a> shots. The pull shot was on display. Short balls disappeared into the stands. Full deliveries were driven through the cover region. He also lofted long off with ease. Against left-arm spinner M Siddharth, he played down the ground, hitting against the turn. We saw a focused Rohit Sharma against LSG," said Gavaskar.
"If he continues this form, Mumbai Indians will hurt the playoff hopes of many teams in the remaining matches," he added.

With an aim of chasing 229 runs, MI scored 229 runs for the loss of four wickets in 18.4 overs.
The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ipl-2026-ryan-rickelton-departs-after-scoring-37-runs-mi-reach-90-runs-in-10-overs-against-csk-23628557" rel="nofollow">Ryan Rickelton</a> showcased an aggressive batting display.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Rickelton delivered a knock of 83 runs off just 32 balls, including six boundaries and eight maximums. Fellow opening batsman Rohit Sharma also registered 84 runs in 44 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and seven maximums.
Tilak Varma departed after scoring 11 runs in 13 balls. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav was also dismissed on 12 runs in seven balls, including two boundaries.
<a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/photo/ipl-2026-naman-dhir-fighting-half-century-helps-paltan-cruise-to-159-runs-against-csk-110923/1" rel="nofollow">Naman Dhir</a> and Will Jacks stayed unbeaten. Facing 12 balls, Dhir scored 23 runs, including three boundaries and a maximum, whereas Jacks registered 10 runs in four balls, with the help of a maximum.
LSG's Impact Player, M Siddharth, claimed two wickets by conceding 47 runs in four overs. Mohsin Khan and Mohammed Shami also chipped in with one wicket each.
Earlier, having put to bat first, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) lost the early wicket of its opening batsman, Josh Inglis, on 13 runs in five balls, including three boundaries. Fellow opening batsman Mitchell Marsh departed after scoring 44 runs in 25 balls, with the help of four boundaries and three maximums.
Swashbuckling batsman Nicholas Pooran delivered a blistering knock of 63 runs. His knock came in 21 balls, and included a boundary and eight maximums.
Later, captain <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/ipl-2026-lsg-skipper-rishabh-pant-speaks-about-six-wicket-defeat-against-mi-23628837" rel="nofollow">Rishabh Pant</a> registered 15 runs in 10 balls, including a boundary and a maximum. Akshat Raghuwanshi was dismissed on 11 runs in seven balls, including a maximum. Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh stayed unbeaten. Facing 25 balls, Markram scored 31 runs, including a boundary and a maximum, whereas Himmar smashed 40 runs off 31 balls, laced with two boundaries and the same number of maximums. With this, the Super Giants posted a total of 228 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs.
Mumbai Indians' (MI) Corbin Bosch returned with the figures of two wickets for 20 runs in two overs. Allah Ghazanfar, Raghu Sharma, and Will Jacks also bagged one wicket each. Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar went wicketless in the IPL 2026 match against LSG.
