When Saurashtra plays, the focus has always been on Cheteshwar Pujara or Ravindra Jadeja. A little on Sheldon Jackson, Arpit Vasavada or Kamlesh Makwana too at times. Before them, the spotlight was on their current coach Sitanshu Kotak, or the unpredictability of the Saurashtra team.
But never so much on their skipper Jaydev Shah. Not even when he became the most capped skipper in Ranji Trophy history.
Against Maharashtra yesterday in Vizianagaram, Shah scored a stroke-filled 217 (off 270 balls) to help Saurashtra score 657 for eight declared on Day Two.
It was skipper Shah&rsquo;s maiden double century in the Ranji Trophy. He missed a double hundred by seven runs in the season opener against Rajasthan.
&ldquo;I am in a good frame of mind this season. I have practised a lot and have tried to work on my mental game too which was my undoing in the past. I am more relaxed and just playing my natural game,&rdquo; Jaydev told mid-day over phone from Vizianagaram.
Saurashtra will now miss the services of Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja with a packed India calendar. &ldquo;That is bound to happen. It is a young team and without Pujara and Jadeja I have to take responsibility and show the way. We were lucky to have Pujara for this match, but I can&rsquo;t relax because of that and just carriedon,&rdquo; said Jaydev.
