While Mahendra Singh Dhoni's exploits with the bat against Kings XI Punjab ensured Chennai Super Kings a place in the semi-finals, it has all but ended Kolkata Knight Riders' chances too.

| KKR skipper Sourav Ganguly |
The team, led this year by Sourav Ganguly, is still in the running for the fourth semi-final place but only statistically. The scenario would have been different had Chennai lost as KKR would have had a better chance to get past the run rates of Delhi Daredevils or Deccan Chargers.
But as things stand now, they need to beat Mumbai by a whopping margin to better Royal Challengers Bangalore's run rate. RCB's run rate is + 0.219 and KKR's is -0.456.
Sample the below scenario which gives an example of how difficult the situation is for Ganguly and Co.
If KKR bat first and score 200 in 20 overs, they will have to dismiss Mumbai Indians for 27 or less.
The Indians are likely to rest a few key players but even if that does happen, KKR making the semis looks almost impossible.
