Emotions took over Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana at the DY Patil Stadium during the India versus Bangladesh match on Sunday when he touched the coveted Women’s Cricket World Cup trophy in his capacity as UNICEF India’s national ambassador, along with a bunch of kids. “That was the best moment of the day.
Touching the trophy and placing it was a very special moment for me because I always wanted to be a cricketer as a kid. I’ve also been a sports presenter during the initial years of my career so, being a cricket fan, this was quite surreal,” Khurrana, who has represented the Panchkula district cricket team in Haryana as a leg-spinner, told mid-day.
The actor struggled to pick one favourite women’s cricketer from the Indian team, saying there were too many good players to choose from. “We have a great bunch of players. We have a great bench strength too. [Vice-captain and opener] Smriti Mandhana and [opener] Pratika Rawal, have been performing well. Also, [off-spinning all-rounder] Deepti Sharma is one of the best all-rounders in the world right now. So, I’m just excited to see them, they are legends for me. I can’t name one, so I have to name three,” he said.
Being a cricket fan, Khurrana admitted he was nervous when the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side lost three back-to-back matches (to South Africa, Australia, and England) earlier. “It was quite nerve-wracking to see the girls almost reaching the finishing line and not completing it during the initial part of the tournament. But now, I think we have peaked at the right time, Harman’s girls are doing great. We have reached top form when it comes to performers like Smriti, Deepti or Pratika and even Harman, who is leading from the front. I’m very glad that we have reached the semi-finals and we are going to hopefully win the semi-final and final also,” Khurrana signed off.
