West Indies power-hitter Chris Gayle sparked controversy by opening up about his turbulent stint with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings, revealing that he felt 'disrespected' by the team management and even experienced 'depression' during his time with the franchise.
Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Gayle didn’t hold back while recounting his experience with the Mohali-based side, which he represented from 2018 to 2021. The veteran opener, known for his flamboyant batting and larger-than-life persona, said he was left hurt by the way he was treated, despite his contributions to the league and consistent performances in earlier seasons.
“My IPL ended prematurely with Punjab. I was disrespected at Kings XI. I felt I wasn’t treated properly as a senior who had done so much for the league and brought value. They treated me like a kid. For the first time in my life, I felt like getting into depression.”
The 44-year-old went on to recall a particularly emotional moment with then-head coach Anil Kumble, saying, “I broke down talking to Anil Kumble because I was really hurt. I was disappointed with him and the way the franchise was run.”
Gayle also mentioned a phone call from then-captain KL Rahul, who tried to convince him to stay on with the side. However, the Jamaican had made up his mind.
“KL Rahul even called me saying, 'Chris, stay, you'll play the next game'. But I just said, 'I wish you all the best', and packed my bag, and walked out.”
Gayle was bought by Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) at the 2018 mega auction for Rs 2 crore. Over the next three seasons, he was among the team’s most consistent performers, averaging over 40 each year. However, in the 2021 season, his form dipped as he managed just 193 runs in 10 innings, eventually withdrawing midway through the tournament citing bio-bubble fatigue.
Following that season, Gayle opted out of the 2022 IPL mega auction, hinting that his decision was influenced by the treatment he received during his final year with the franchise. He never returned to play in the IPL thereafter.
Gayle’s IPL legacy, however, remains formidable. In 141 innings, he amassed 4,965 runs at an average of 39.72, including six centuries and 31 fifties. He remains one of the most destructive batters in T20 history and a fan favourite across the globe.
