Despite a prolonged rain interruption on Sunday evening, the Indian Premier League 2025 Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings will go ahead without any reduction in overs. The BCCI confirmed that play will resume at 9:45 PM IST, with no overs lost.

The match, held at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, was initially scheduled to start at 7:30 PM IST. However, just as players prepared to take the field, light drizzle began, prompting ground staff to swiftly cover the pitch and surrounding areas. The drizzle soon intensified, disrupting hopes of an on-time start. A brief clearing gave a glimmer of hope, but a second, more sustained downpour delayed proceedings even further.

Earlier in the evening, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field first in what is effectively a semifinal clash, with the winner securing a coveted berth in the IPL 2025 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

In terms of team changes, Punjab made a strategic call by reintroducing veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal to bolster their spin arsenal. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians were forced to tweak their lineup due to injury concerns, bringing in English left-arm pacer Reece Topley to replace the sidelined Richard Gleeson.

For Punjab Kings, the stakes are monumental. Still recovering from a heavy eight-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1, they are now in a must-win situation to keep their hopes of a maiden IPL title alive. The crushing nature of that previous loss has left them under pressure, and the rain delay may add an extra layer of psychological strain.

On the other hand, Mumbai Indians come into this fixture riding a wave of confidence. Their emphatic 20-run victory over Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator underscored their depth and playoff pedigree. Having already won five IPL titles and boasting an unmatched record in knockout matches, MI will look to leverage their experience and momentum as they chase a sixth crown.
