Peter Smith, the father of Australian skipper Steven was hopeful of his son scoring a double century yesterday. But that could not happen as the young captain stayed unbeaten on 178 in Australia&rsquo;s first innings score of 451 all out yesterday.&nbsp;
Speaking to mid-day over the phone from Sydney, hours after the Australian innings ended, Peter said: &ldquo;A double ton would have been good, but to be not out at the end of the innings is still a great achievement.&rdquo;
&ldquo;The Ranchi Test has been fascinating so far and I have enjoyed watching it. I even came home from work early yesterday to watch as much as I could,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;The Australian media were not sure how the pitch would play and the assumption was that it would be low, slow and take spin. So far, that assessment has been wrong and it appears to be playing well,&rdquo; On Team India skipper Virat Kohli, with whom Smith was embroiled in a controversy recently and who didn&rsquo;t take the field at all on Day Two as he is recuperating from a shoulder injury sustained while fielding on the opening day, Peter said from New South Wales: &ldquo;It is not good to see any player injured. I was watching when Kohli landed heavily on his shoulder and it was immediately evident the injury was significant. Losing your captain in that way is always difficult for any team.
&ldquo;Steven has always suggested that I should come to India for one of the Tests. He believes the atmosphere can be fascinating. Unfortunately, due to work commitments I won&rsquo;t be able to visit India during this series,&rdquo; added Peter.
