Former Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has revealed his experience working with former skipper Rohit Sharma during their time together in the Indian dressing room.
Under Dravid's coaching and Rohit's captaincy, Team India ended their 17-year-long wait for the ICC T20 World Cup in the previous year. They defeated South Africa in the title clash in Barbados.
Dravid said that Rohit, as a captain, was very clear about how he wanted to run the team and deeply cared about the side.
"I think it was really good. Firstly, he deeply cared about the team. You know, right from the first day, I think he was very clear about how he wanted to run the team and what was important to him," he said.
"That's really important in any relationship with a captain and a coach, and especially the way I coach," he added while speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin on Kutti Stories.
Rahul, being a captain in his time, said that a skipper has to lead the team according to the situation, and being a coach, you need to support your captain.
"I always like to believe that it should be the captain's team. I've been a player and I've been a captain as well. But a captain has to lead it in terms of the direction he wants to go in, and you have to support him and help him in that. Of course, you need to sometimes help a captain in terms of getting that clarity and understanding what is required," said Dravid, who has scored 13,288 runs for India in Test cricket.
The former head coach was full of praise for Rohit Sharma and said that he was very clear about what he expected from the team and how he wanted the team's atmosphere to be.
"But with Rohit, I thought he was very clear about what he wanted from the team, how he wanted the environment to be, how he wanted the atmosphere to be, how he wanted things to run. I think he has had so much experience over the years, it really helped. He was very clear on those things," he concluded.
