Heavy rain was set to delay the start of the first Test match between South Africa and India at SuperSport Park here on Thursday.

Steady rain fell overnight and was still falling half an hour before the scheduled start.

Roads near the ground were flooded and although there were only small pools of water on the field, mainly near the boundary, the prospects looked poor, with more rain predicted for the rest of the day.

The three-match series pits India, rated number one in Test cricket, against their nearest challengers on the International Cricket Council rankings.
