The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was left red-faced after a notable error on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season after a scorecard mix-up caused confusion during Mumbai’s match against Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar.

The mix-up involved Mumbai cricketers and siblings Sarfaraz Khan and Musheer Khan. During Mumbai’s match against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar when the official BCCI website mistakenly listed Sarfaraz Khan as the opening batter. According to the scorecard, he was dismissed for a duck by fast bowler Auqib Nabi, but this information turned out to be incorrect.

The error occurred when the official BCCI website mentioned the incorrect details during the match.

The mistake baffled fans, as Sarfaraz is a regular middle-order batter and rarely opens.

It was later clarified that it was actually Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz’s younger brother, who had opened and was dismissed for a three-ball duck. The scorecard was corrected, but not before confusion spread across social media and commentary circles.

Sarfaraz eventually came in at No. 5 and scored a fluent 42 off 48 balls, including six fours and a six, before being run out.

The BCCI later corrected the mistake on the scorecard; however, the delay in doing so caused enough confusion. Sarfaraz eventually came in to bat at his usual position at No. 5.

Earlier, after Musheer’s early exit, Ayush Mhatre (28) and Ajinkya Rahane (27) built a solid 61-run partnership for the second wicket. However, both departed in quick succession. Siddhesh Lad (86) and Shams Mulani (23) steadied the innings, guiding Mumbai to 302/5 at stumps.

The 2025-26 season of the Ranji Trophy, India’s top domestic red-ball cricket tournament began, on Wednesday with 38 teams competing across the country. The 91st edition of India’s premier red-ball domestic tournament features 38 teams and runs until February 24, 2026.

Vidarbha are the defending champions at the tournament. The team have earlier defeated Kerala in the previous season’s final. On the other hand, Mumbai, with 42 titles so far, are eyeing another championship run in this season of cricket tournament.
