Resumption of IPL-14 won't happen anytime soon: IPL chairman Brijesh Patel

The Indian’s Premier League’s (IPL) resumption anytime soon is unlikely, according to the T20 league’s chairman Brijesh Patel. “We have to look at the Future Tour Programme [of not just the Indian team but also of the other international teams]. We have to first identify a window which is available, only then we can look at the possibility of resumption [of IPL-14],” Patel told mid-day on Tuesday.

The tournament had reached its halfway mark with six teams having played seven matches each, while Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings played one extra game compared to the others.

The eight franchises too are aware that the IPL won’t resume soon. “I don’t think it [resumption of IPL-14] can happen anytime soon. The T20 World Cup is also there. So, we will have to wait and see what window the BCCI finds appropriate to conduct the remainder of the matches,” Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan said.
The IPL was indefinitely postponed after more Covid-19 positive cases emerged in some of the other teams on Tuesday. BCCI, in a statement, said that it “does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL.”

Virat Kohli & Co are set to play against New Zealand in the World Test Championship final from June 18 to 22 at Southampton. Thereafter, from August 4 to September 14, they will be engaged in a full series against England. Then the ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled [October and November].

“We will have to see whether there is a short window available before the T20 World Cup. That would be ideal from the preparation point of view as well. If that’s not possible then something will have to be worked out post the World Cup,” said a franchisee official.
