The non-inclusion of Ajinkya Rahane in the playing XI was an unexpected move. Although the Indian team management has identified Rahane for only the opening slot, his inclusion in yesterday's ODI could have helped boost his self-confidence which has taken a severe beating after failures in the Test series against Sri Lanka.

With the South Africa tour coming up, it would have been ideal to give Rahane as many opportunities to bounce back for the all-important tour. India skipper Rohit Sharma reiterated the team management's decision to not tinker with Rahane's batting order anymore just to accommodate him. "We have made it clear in Sri Lanka that he [Rahane] is an opening batsman and we don't want to keep changing his batting slot. Not just his, but it plays on anyone's mind if one's batting order is kept on changing," said Rohit after the loss.
