Former India captain Ravi Shastri, whose name was suggested by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a three-man panel to probe the spot fixing scandal, was not a choice that former BCCI chief Shashank Manohar agreed to. According to sources within the BCCI, Manohar opposed Shastri&rsquo;s name because he is a Board-contracted commentator.

Late in the evening, PTI reported that there was a fiery exchange of words between Manohar and BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel when Shastri&rsquo;s name was being discussed.
Few members of the Working Committee wanted Shastri in the panel because he is part of the IPL Code of Behaviour and Technical panel. Also, the Supreme Court made passing mentions of his stature before recommending that Sunil Gavaskar be made stand-in BCCI president for matters relating to the controversial IPL.
&ldquo;No cricketer&rsquo;s name came up for discussion except Shastri and Shivlal Yadav but Yadav, being the BCCI interim boss, refused to be part of the three-man panel,&rdquo; said a source. Manohar proposed the names of former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee and Kolkata-based Justice Chakraborty. However, Manohar&rsquo;s recommendations were not accepted by the board members.
BCCI&rsquo;s in-house legal expert Rahul Mascarenhas will officially communicate the names of the panel to the BCCI lawyers. The BCCI members also agreed to convene a Special General Meeting in May when the decision to propose N Srinivasan&rsquo;s replacement on the disciplinary committee will be made.
