India captain Shubman Gill’s Test jersey, worn during the prestigious Lord’s Test against England, fetched an impressive 4,600 euros (approximately Rs 5.41 lakh) at a recent charity auction, emerging as the most valuable item at the event. The Budds auction, held in support of the Ruth Strauss Foundation, featured memorabilia from several prominent cricketers, but it was Gill’s shirt that garnered the highest bid of the night.

The jersey, part of the Red for Ruth initiative, was auctioned under a special lot dedicated to the foundation established in memory of former England captain Andrew Strauss’ late wife, Ruth, who passed away from a rare form of cancer in 2018. Each year, a designated day during the Lord’s Test is turned ‘Red’ to raise awareness and funds for families affected by terminal illnesses, with players, officials, and fans donning red apparel as a tribute.

According to the auction listing, Gill’s jersey was described as 'match-worn and unwashed, showing clear signs of use'. The shirt featured the official India Test crest and was part of a special-edition kit worn to honour the occasion. The description further praised Gill’s elegance at the crease and labelled the shirt a rare collector’s item from a memorable match at the ‘Home of Cricket’.

“This special-edition shirt, worn in support of the Ruth Strauss Foundation, features the official India Test crest and shows visible signs of match wear, with staining and unwashed. Gill, renowned for his graceful stroke play and calm temperament, is one of the brightest talents in world cricket. Shirt is unwashed and match worn—a rare collector’s item from a memorable day at the Home of Cricket," read the description of Gill's jersey on the auction website.

Following Gill’s jersey in value were those worn by star Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, which fetched a combined 4,200 euros (approx. Rs 4.94 lakh). Jadeja, in particular, was a standout performer in the series, amassing over 500 runs and playing a pivotal role in India’s campaign.

KL Rahul’s jersey secured the third-highest bid among the Indian team, selling for 4,000 euros (around Rs 4.70 lakh). Among the English players, Joe Root’s jersey commanded the highest price, closing at 3,800 euros (approx. Rs 4.47 lakh), a testament to his enduring popularity among cricket fans.

The overwhelming response to the auction highlights not only the emotional significance of the Red for Ruth initiative but also the global reach and popularity of Test cricket’s modern stars. With fans and collectors eager to own a piece of history, especially one tied to such a meaningful cause, the auction proved to be a resounding success for the Ruth Strauss Foundation.
