Geoff Lawson is not among those former Australia players who believe that Cricket Australia was wrong in keeping a lid on the Tim Paine controversy when it happened in 2018.

“You had an investigation in 2018 and you came up with some findings. That’s a positive thing to do because it allows everybody to get on with their lives—cricketing or private. There is a lot of justification of what was done and it was before Paine became captain of Australia,” said the former fast bowler, who said he was not “fully sure” whether Paine did the right thing to resign as captain. “A lot of people have said things with the knowledge of hindsight and I don’t think they are being pretty accurate.”

The Tasmanian took over from Steven Smith, who was involved in the Sandpaper controversy of March 2018. “Paine did whatever was asked of him. He took the team away from that Sandpaper business. I don’t think anyone’s got any complaints about that. On that score, he’s been a terrific captain,” said Lawson.
