London: Australian Trevor Bayliss is the new England coach, and will take charge of the team for the first time in this summer's Ashes. <img title="Trevor Bayliss. Former Sri Lanka and current New South Wales coach Bayliss has leapfrogged initial front-runner, and compatriot Jason Gillespie, to replace the sacked Peter Moores.
His appointment was confirmed in an England and Wales Cricket Board statement yesterday afternoon, in which the governing body's director Andrew Strauss praised the 52-year-old's "outstanding record as a coach" and described Bayliss' "expertise in the shorter forms of the game" as "vital" &mdash; with a Champions Trophy and then World Cup set to be played in this country in the next four years.
Caretaker coach Paul Farbrace, who worked alongside Bayliss when both were with Sri Lanka and oversaw England's first Test victory against New Zealand which was completed at Lord's on Monday, will remain in charge for the remainder of the series and the following limited-overs matches. Farbrace will stay with England too as Bayliss' assistant.
Bayliss honoured Bayliss spoke of the "honour" of being appointed England coach, and of looking forward to working again with Farbrace. Bayliss, whose first assignment begins against his native country in the first Ashes Test in Cardiff on July 8, said: "It's an honour to be appointed England coach.
"There's a great opportunity to help (Test and one-day international captains) Alastair Cook and Eoin Morgan shape the direction and development of their respective teams.
"I am also looking forward to working alongside Paul Farbrace once again as we have a similar outlook on the game, get on well after two years working together and have kept in touch.
"What particularly excites me about the role is the chance to work with a very talented group of players. I firmly believe that the team has a bright future and I'll be doing everything I can to help them realise their potential and achieve success on a consistent basis."
Strauss said: "Trevor has an outstanding record as coach, has global experience and is very highly regarded in the game. He has proved himself in both domestic and international cricket, has a strong reputation for man-management and has shown how to build winning teams in all three formats."
This summer's Ashes rematch with tourists who whitewashed England 5-0 down under in 2013-14 will be his first focus after his arrival next month, but Strauss is also looking further ahead to the global tournaments to come.
