Indian cricket fans have been looking for a cricketer to fill the giant vaccum created by icon Sachin Tendulkar's retirement. Well, it seems the wait is over. Virat Kohli seems ready to take over the mantle from SRT.
Virat Kohli is on a record-breaking spree. It is being rightly said that 2016 is Kohli's year with the BCCI even terming it 'Kohlified'.
The Indian Test captain scored a career-best 235 against England on the fourth day of the fourth test match being played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Records tumbled one after another as Kohli's third double ton in as many Test series was complemented by Jayant Yadav's maiden hundred with India piling up a mammoth 631 thereby taking a lead of 231 runs. He was eventually caught out by James Anderson off Chris Woakes' bowling.
In reply, England were left tottering at 182 for 6 needing another 49 runs to avoid innings defeat as the hosts are now all but assured to regain the Anthony De Mello Trophy that they had lost back in 2012.
His 235 against England at the Wankhede stadium on Sunday saw him break some more records. Here are some of them:
This is the highest Test score by an India captain. The previous best had been set by MS Dhoni -- 224 versus Australia in Chennai in 2013.
Kohli has become only the fifth batsman - the first Indian - to score three double-hundreds in a year.
Kohli has also equaled Sachin Tendulkar's record for most hundreds (4) by an Indian captain in a calendar year.
In 84 years and 506 Tests, Indian captains have scored seven double hundreds. Virat Kohli has hit three of them – all this year.
Kohli's Test average as captain -- 65.50 -- is second only to Sir Don Bradman's 101.51 among skippers with 2000-plus Test runs.
During his brilliant knock, Kohli went past the 600-run mark in the series. He has now scored 640 runs at an average of 128, with two fifties and two hundreds. This is the highest by an Indian against England, surpassing Rahul Dravid’s 602 during the 2002 series in England.
It is the highest Test score by an Indian batsman against England, breaking a 23-year-old record, which was set by Vinod Kambli, who had smashed 224 at Wankhede in 1993.

Kohli became the first Indian cricketer to score three Test double centuries in a year -- 200 vs West Indies in July 2016; 211 vs New Zealand in October 2016 and 235 vs England in December 2016.
He also is the first batsman to hit three double centuries in three successive series.
Kohli is the first Indian to aggregate 1000 Test runs in a calendar year since Rahul Dravid, who made 1145 runs in 2011.
The Delhi batsman is the third Indian batsman after Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid to aggregate over 600 runs in a series on two separate occasions.
The 235 is the fifth-best by a captain against England with West Indian legend Brian Lara’s masterful 400* in Antigua in 2004 still on top of the list.
He has now gone past England's Joe Root (2399 runs) to become the leading run-scorer in international cricket in 2016.
The 28-year-old averages more than 50 in all three formats of the game and is the only player to have 50+ average in all formats! In Tests, it is 50.53; in ODIs it's 52.93 and in T20Is it's 57.13.
He is the 14th Indian to complete 4000 runs in Test cricket and the second youngest for India after Sachin Tendulkar to accomplish this feat.
The Delhi batsman is also the first Indian captain in the last decade and only the fourth overall to aggregate 1000 Test runs in a year.

Virat has scored 15 hundreds in 89 innings till date, which is the second quickest by an Indian batsman next only to the 77 taken by Sunil Gavaskar.
With this double ton, Kohli has joined an elite club that has only four other cricketers who have scored double centuries on a minimum of 3 occasions in a calendar year: Michael Clarke with four double tons is on the top, followed by Sir Donald Bradman, Brendon McCullum and Ricky Ponting at three.
Kohli and Jayant Yadav shared a 241-run partnership, which is India's highest eighth-wicket stand in Tests. They overtook the previous highest of 161, which was scored by the pair of Mohammad Azharuddin and Anil Kumble against South Africa in Kolkata in 1996.
Kohli-Jayant duo also eclipsed the previous highest eighth-wicket partnership of 168 between the two countries standing in the name of England's Ray Illingworth and Peter Lever at Old Trafford, Manchester in 1971.
The partnership was finally broken at 605 after the duo had come close to bettering the century-old all-time best eighth-wicket of 243 between Australia's M J Hartigan and C Hill of Australia set in 1908.
