Two days after captaining India to a T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav is slowly taking in the enormity of the achievement that has put him in august company alongside Kapil Dev (1983 ODI World Cup-winning captain), MS Dhoni (2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup-winning captain) and Rohit Sharma (2024 T20 World Cup-winning captain).
As the entire nation continues to celebrate India’s T20 World Cup win in Ahmedabad on Sunday, skipper Suryakumar revealed that he and his team continued their celebrations right up to the next morning. “I wish I could share everything about what we did that night after being world champions, but [I can’t]. I can tell you that we had a great time and were awake till 8am,” Suryakumar said on his return from Ahmedabad on Monday.
On being compared to the likes of Rohit and Dhoni, Suryakumar said it feels good to join elite company. He added that he had spoken to Dhoni ahead of this World Cup: “I had met him [MS Dhoni] before the tournament and he told me how to approach an ICC tournament. He told me that we have a good team, we just have to be courageous and we will definitely win.”
