Rohit Sharma being felicitated by Ajit Wadekar in 2007
Former India captain late Ajit Wadekar and present ODI skipper Rohit Sharma, who have brought glory to Mumbai and Indian cricket, deservingly have stands in their names at the Wankhede Stadium. The stands were unveiled at a function organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) last Friday, May 16.
Coincidentally, 18 years ago, Rohit, who was part of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy-winning team, was felicitated by Wadekar in the same month in 2007 during a function organised by Sports Promotion Group (SPG) at the Bengal Club in Shivaji Park. Then chief guest Wadekar had honoured the entire Mumbai team, including Rohit.
Rohit, 38, was a promising talent then and had represented India in the 2006 U-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka besides being an important part of the Amol Muzumdar-led Mumbai team’s 2006-07 Ranji Trophy triumph.
Sangam Lad, who is the founder of SPG, recalled his interaction with Rohit following the felicitation function. “After Wadekar sir felicitated the Mumbai team, I remember telling Rohit that he should cherish this trophy as it has come from a man who is known to have the midas touch. I told him that with Wadekar sir’s blessings his cricketing career will flourish. And now, exactly 18 years later, I’m thrilled to see a stand in Rohit’s name at the Wankhede alongside one that’s named after Wadekar sir. Rohit’s achievements inspire cricketers all over the world,” Lad told mid-day.
Rohit has scored 11,168 runs in 273 ODIs so far, including 32 centuries. He has retired from the other formats, having played 67 Tests and 159 T20Is. Wadekar, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 77, represented the country in 37 Tests and two ODIs from 1966 to 1974.
