As Australia gear up for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, traditional opening batsman Usman Khawaja stated that whenever it's time for him to step away from the game, he will gracefully do that.
"I'm really just enjoying my cricket at the moment. Everything that has a beginning has an end. I don't know when that end will be, but for me it's all about staying in the moment, enjoying it one Test match at a time, one series at a time. And when it's time to hang up the boots, I'll gracefully do that, whatever it be," Khawaja told ICC.
Khawaja, aged 38, is nearing the end of his international career. Previously, following the retirement of David Warner, the Pakistan-born has taken the responsibility on his shoulders to provide stability in the top-order of Australia's batting line-up.
Further, he stated that age is an irrelevant factor for him in terms of retirement and feels that if he can make crucial contributions to the team, then he still has the hunger to score runs.
"To me, age is irrelevant. If I'm still enjoying my game, still training really hard, I'm still scoring runs, still contributing to the team where I can, I've still got the hunger. I don't really think of anything as different, but I'm very open," he said.
Coming to the Aussies' WTC final preparations, there are rumours stating that Australia's think tank is looking to promote Marnus Labuschagne at number three. Sam Konstas, who impressed during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is likely to open the innings with Khawaja.
