Liverpool Football Club was plunged into mourning on Thursday following the tragic death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother, who lost their lives in a devastating car accident in Spain. According to Spanish authorities, the vehicle in which they were travelling veered off a motorway in the northern province of Zamora shortly after midnight, subsequently bursting into flames.

Jota, who was just 28, had recently celebrated a personal milestone, marrying his long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22. The couple shared three young children. Jota spent the last five years at Anfield and helped the English giants win the Premier League last season. 


"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," the club said in a statement. "The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support."


Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said on Instagram: “Absolutely devastated by the sad news about Diogo Jota. Thoughts are with his wife Rute and their three kids.”

Ex-Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville said in a social media post: “That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother. All my love and best wishes to his family.”

Cristiano Ronaldo also paid tribute to his Portugal teammate, writing: "It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you."

Jota's former club Porto said: "Futebol Clube do Porto is in mourning. It is with shock and deep regret that we send our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who was also our youth player. May they rest in peace."

Arsenal-supporting TV presenter Piers Morgan said: “Desperately sad news coming out of Spain that Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota, 28, has died, along with his brother, in a car accident in Zamora. He only got married 2 weeks ago. Heart-breaking.”

Fabrizio Romano posted: “Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother have both passed away due to traffic accident. Deepest condolences, support, and thoughts are with those involved, his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.”
