Liverpool forward Diogo Jota passed away in a car accident on Thursday, according to a report in Marca.
According to Marca, Jota, aged 28, and his brother Andre died while travelling in a vehicle in the province of Zamora and burst into flames. Police were investigating the causes. They said there were no other vehicles involved.
His brother, Andre, was also a professional footballer with Penafiel, a Portuguese second-tier club.
Jota played a crucial role in Liverpool's Premier League triumph last season. The 28-year-old also helped Portugal to beat Spain in the final of the Nations League in June. The official social media handle of Liverpool shared a post, which read, "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota". Taking to X:
In his career, he has represented F.C. Paços de Ferreira, Atlético Madrid, FC Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C., and Liverpool. He had served Portugal at U-19, U-21, U-23 and senior team.
Jota signed a long-term deal with Liverpool on September 19, 2020. Five days later, he debuted in the English Football League Cup.
According to reports, Jota was recently married to his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso. The couple, who have three children, were seen happy on their wedding day, on June 22, 2025. He recently shared a post with his wife on his official social media handle. Taking to X:

Jota switched his team from Wolverhampton to Liverpool in 2020 for a whopping price of €44.7 million. Since then, he has represented Liverpool in 182 games and had scored 65 goals and 26 assists. With the Merseyside club, he has won a Premier League title, an FA Cup title, and a League Cup title.
Earlier, Atletico Madrid acquired his services for €7 million. The former Atletico Madrid, Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers star scored nine goals in all competitions last season as Liverpool cruised to their 20th Premier League title.
