When France take on Senegal in their World Cup opener here on Tuesday, star forward Kylian Mbappé will have a special record to break.
Mbappe is just one goal short of Olivier Giroud’s all-time record of 57 goals for France. Interestingly, Mbappe, who has netted 12 goals in two World Cups so far, is four shy of Germany’s Miroslav Klose, the competition’s all-time highest scorer.
However, records don’t necessarily drive the France skipper. When asked about the Klose record recently, Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick in the 2022 World Cup final heart-break against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, made it amply clear that he’s got his eyes firmly on the top prize: “It’s nice to be on a list of top goal-scorers, though I’m not sure if it’s fair because they are old compared to me. I’ve been lucky enough to play in two World Cups and go far, as well as perform well. I want to keep making history, but what I want most is to return to France with the World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Senegal will look to their captain and defender Kalidou Koulibaly to hold firm at the back even as they would expect their all-time leading goal-scorer Sadio Mane (55 goals in 128 internationals) to deliver upfront.
56 No. of goals Kylian Mbappe has scored for France; one less than Olivier Giroud
