France arrests 557 football fans since start of Euro 2016

Paris: The French police have arrested 557 fans since the start of the Euro football championship for taking part in violent acts, with 21 expelled from the country, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said on Monday.

The minister added that among these, 344 were under arrest while some have already been convicted in an immediate appearance before the courts and received prison sentences, reports Efe.

Cazeneuve considered that the appropriate corrections were made after the altercations that occurred on June 11 in Marseille hours before the England-Russia match.

The minister said that the government has mobilised 70,000 policemen and gendarmes to secure the tournament which started on June 10.
