St Joseph crush Antonio Da Silva to enter Quarter Final

St Joseph High School (Wadala) managed to capitalise on the chances that came their way to register a fluent 3-0 win against Dr Antonio Da Silva (Dadar) in a pre-quarter-final match of the boys’ under-16 Ahmed Sailor knockout MSSA inter-school football tournament at the St Francis D’Assisi HS ground, Borivli, on Tuesday.

Raj strikes for Wadala boys


The Wadala schoolboys, who enjoyed more ball possession and had a better share of the attacks, finally broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. Striker Raj Anavkar found the back of the Da Silva net which ensured his team went into the break with a slender 1-0 advantage.

In the second session, St Joseph’s struck two quick goals through their consistent goal-scorers Amish Rai in the 24th minute and Bilal Khan in the 27th minute to secure the win and a place in the quarter-final. Earlier, in another Last 16 encounter, Christ Church (Byculla) staved off a late challenge from Bombay Scottish (Mahim) to snatch a close 3-1 win via the tie-breaker after the match finished in a 1-1 draw. Christ Church took the lead in the second half through Abdaar Chashmawala’s strike in the 31st minute.

Bombay Scottish fight back

But, Scottish found a late equaliser through Ishaan Singh in the third minute of additional period to force a draw and extend the match to the tie-breaker.

In the ensuing tense penalty shootout duel, Christ Church managed to convert two of their attempts through Farhan Khan and Mohammad Mojawala, while Scottish failed to score from their first four attempts to end up on the losing side.

DY Patil International win

Meanwhile, in a boys’ U-16 Div-IV match, Jiya Gala struck a hat-trick to steer DY Patil International (Worli) to a 3-0 win against Witty International (Malad). In another tie, Our Lady of Dolours (Marine Lines) defeated General Education (Chembur) 2-0.
