Arsenal signed Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres on Saturday, bringing an end to the English Premier League (EPL) club’s search for a goalscorer.
Gyokeres has signed a five-year contract after moving from Sporting Lisbon in a deal that is reportedly worth $85 million (R735 crore). The 27-year-old striker joins the Gunners after establishing himself as one of the deadliest finishers in world football after two outstanding seasons in Portugal where he fired Lisbon to back-to-back league titles. He scored 97 goals in 102 games, including 54 last term, outscoring the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah.
“To come here to a club of Arsenal’s level, I think it’s going to help me perform even better with all the amazing players in this team. I’m really excited to get going,” said Gyokeres.
A top class striker has long-been considered the missing element for Arsenal, who finished as runners-up in each of the last three EPL seasons. The failure to bring in January badly undermined their attempt to challenge Liverpool for the title last term.
“The consistency he has shown in his performances have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves. He is a quick and powerful presence up front,” said manager Mikel Arteta.
