Basel (Switzerland): European champions Portugal were brought crashing back to earth in their opening World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night after suffering a deserved 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.

A goal then could have made things interesting, especially as Switzerland saw Arsenal playmaker Granit Xhaka sent off in stoppage time after picking up a second yellow card, but the home side held on relatively comfortably for the points.
Frustration for France Meanwhile, France, were left frustrated following a goalless draw in Belarus.
Les Bleus had plenty of possession, but even Manchester United's &pound;89million man Paul Pogba could not find a way past the home defence.
In Group H, a brace from Everton's forward Romelu Lukaku helped secure a 3-0 victory in Cyprus for new Belgium manager Roberto Martinez.
