India’s Gulveer Singh etched his name among the great Indian long-distance runners by clinching his second gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships after shattering a decade-old meet record in a tightly-contested men’s 5000m final here on Friday.
The national-record-holding runner clocked a time of 13:24.77 seconds to edge past Thailand’s Kieran Tuntivate, who finished close behind at 13:24.97 seconds, while Japan’s Nagiya Mori took bronze with a time of 13:25.06 seconds.
The previous championship record belonged to Qatar’s Mohamed Al-Garni, who had recorded a time 13:34.47 seconds in the 2015 edition. The win completed a remarkable double for the Indian, who had earlier bagged gold in the 10,000m competition on the opening day.
With his latest performance, Gulveer joined an elite group of Indians to have won gold in the men’s 5000m event of the continental meet — the other three being Gopal Saini (1981), Bahadur Prasad (1993), and G Lakshmanan (2017). Soon after, 18-year-old high-jumper Pooja Singh added to India’s gold medal tally with jump of 1.89m.
